At the time, I did not actually use the motifs as I did not know what to do with them, hence, I filed them away for a rainy day. That day arrived last week as I needed to produce some samples to demonstrate the art of free machine embroidery to my GCSE students, so I sifted through my old art files. I picked out the following example to use:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--WRpvCE267M/TnTJMxakzyI/AAAAAAAAAEs/4gy7gjpuUu8/s1600/007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="273" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--WRpvCE267M/TnTJMxakzyI/AAAAAAAAAEs/4gy7gjpuUu8/s320/007.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Free machining allows the user of the sewing machine to control the fabric by hand, and thus alter the direction and path of the needle and stitching. To free machine, one requires an embroidery foot for the sewing machine (sometimes called a darning foot) this can be seen in some of the following photos. The 'dog feet' on the sewing machine must be lowered too, as they usually control the fabric on it's way through the machine. Refer to the manual of the particular sewing machine, on my Bernina there is a dial which must be set to the hash sign.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UaQXlYXZZb8/TnTNdJ44n0I/AAAAAAAAAFM/tQYT3NTno7o/s1600/017.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="274" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UaQXlYXZZb8/TnTNdJ44n0I/AAAAAAAAAFM/tQYT3NTno7o/s320/017.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lowering the 'dog feet'</td></tr>
</tbody></table><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I decided to show the students free machine embroidery on Lutrador, additionally enabling the demonstration of using a heat gun. Lutrador is a non-woven bonded fabric (similar construction to Vilene fusible interfacing), the fibres are random and bonded to set in position and produce the fabric, as opposed to being woven or knitted into a fabric. </div><br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uzKCnGn5fys/TnTLUOp1XYI/AAAAAAAAAEw/jG3g0NUE4BA/s1600/002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uzKCnGn5fys/TnTLUOp1XYI/AAAAAAAAAEw/jG3g0NUE4BA/s320/002.JPG" width="319" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lutrador in original state<br />
<br />
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>Lutrador can be machined on in it's original state. However, colour can be added by a variety of methods. I have used spray paint (particularly for metallic colours), painted or sponged acrylic paint on the surface, and used Indian inks and dyes. It looks very effective when colours are layered. The application of paint can be used as a masking fluid is used in watercolour painting, i.e. sponge the paint on thinly where the Lutrador is required to dissolve, but put the paint on more thickly to protect areas of the design that need to remain. <br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
After applying colour to the Lutrador, I placed the Lutrador over my motif and traced the design onto it. If it is light application of colour, it should be easy to see through. However, if there is access to a light box this may help. I traced the design using a pencil. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BSmKSSLSONI/TnTMGY7obhI/AAAAAAAAAE8/7RgYUqrLQSQ/s1600/011.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BSmKSSLSONI/TnTMGY7obhI/AAAAAAAAAE8/7RgYUqrLQSQ/s320/011.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lutrador with motif design outlined</td></tr>
</tbody></table>To prepare the Lutrador for free machine embroidery it is safer and much easier to control if it is placed in an embroidery hoop. It is sometimes difficult to get the hoop under the embroidery presser foot, if this happens, remove the presser foot, position the hoop and replace the presser foot. If you choose this method remember, when removing the hoop, you will have to remove the presser foot first to get it off again.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lutrador inserted into embroidery hoop<br />
<br />
<div align="left"></div></td></tr>
</tbody></table>Machine threads: I have used spun polyester machine thread for the basic colours, and highlighted areas with a metallic thread. Metallic thread can be exceedingly frustrating to machine with, because some types break easily. Refer to your machine's manual for advice on using metallic threads, and you can try investing in metallic thread machine needles which have a larger needle eye (however, I do not find them any more effective than a basic needle). Guterman metallic thread is thicker and more reliable. <br />
<br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j_Y2A-_XdMo/TnTMy8z816I/AAAAAAAAAFE/kRP1YJlYS7w/s1600/014.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="218" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j_Y2A-_XdMo/TnTMy8z816I/AAAAAAAAAFE/kRP1YJlYS7w/s320/014.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Metallic thread and spun polyester thread</td></tr>
</tbody></table>The next process is the fun bit, the free machining. Everyone has their own technique, I sometimes use free machine embroidery as a base for another design so in that case I free machine very randomly. However, the nature of the motif I chose required me to 'draw' using the machine. It is best to not have any preconceptions regarding the outcome, just a basic plan. Sometimes my students expect the result to be perfect when it is likely to be very sketchy and can look more effective with several lines of machining as opposed to a single line. I find when 'drawing' with the machine it is best to run the machine fast (I floor the foot pedal), and move the hoop very slowly. For my motif, I decided to outline in a dark purple, then fill in sections in a lilac and pastel green. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Outlining: See the embroidery foot or 'darning foot'</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Filling in the sections in lilac.</td></tr>

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LIfvg43ijyU/TnTOPMY5JVI/AAAAAAAAAFY/OOnZv4sgzl8/s1600/021.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LIfvg43ijyU/TnTOPMY5JVI/AAAAAAAAAFY/OOnZv4sgzl8/s320/021.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Filling in sections in green, and highlighting with metallic thread<br />
<br />
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>Once the free machine embroidery is completed, remove the Lutrador from the embroidery hoop. The applied paint and the machine embroidery will both act as masks to protect the Lutrador. Next, I used a heat gun to 'burn away' areas of the Lutrador. I purchased my heat gun from Hobbycraft and it was about £26. (I did search online for a cheaper one, but they were all a similar price). Please be careful, the heat gun burns away fibres, so do not point it at your clothing or hair! <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e7i4VcqGDYI/TnTO6fzAvuI/AAAAAAAAAFg/PLohIjvt5E8/s1600/026.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e7i4VcqGDYI/TnTO6fzAvuI/AAAAAAAAAFg/PLohIjvt5E8/s320/026.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Heat Gun</td></tr>
</tbody></table>The heat gun will burn away as much or little as you want it to, leaving areas that have been free machine embroidered, or where the paint is thicker. It is important to have a design that connects, otherwise you may find that the segments fall apart. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DsN6OVaTLec/TnTOvcl-mEI/AAAAAAAAAFc/-Esg_ec7k1c/s1600/023.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DsN6OVaTLec/TnTOvcl-mEI/AAAAAAAAAFc/-Esg_ec7k1c/s320/023.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The finished sample.</td></tr>
</tbody></table><br />
My example has gained a 'shabby-chic' or antiqued effect. This could be layered with other fabrics or Lutrador surfaces to inject more colour, texture and depth. <br />

A beautiful show (apparently much improved since last year), three large marquees full of exhibitors, an exquisite Spanish horse show and music from a very talented and entertaining jazz group. Sunday was a glorious day of sunshine (albeit very bustery), attracting lots of families with young children running around and a very impressive variety of dog breeds! Monday...well not so good, a full day of rain, although it was quite busy in the marquees as the public sheltered from the rain! <br />

<br />
I have to admit, on the first morning I had a wander (hiding my exhibitor's badge) purely to have a nosey at the other stalls - Textiles being my obvious interest. There were two exhibitions that really impressed me, and simultaneously made me feel insecure regarding my own offerings! One was an exhibition (I say exhibition because that's what had been presented, whereas my stall remained a 'stall') of elegant sculptural bags that any lady would be proud to have on her arm. The quality, attention to detail, the presentation and the 'uniqueness' was paramount. Rumour has it that grown women were fighting over bags at this stall in a previous year. The second exhibition was a Textiles Artist who had the most gorgeous compositions on canvases and framed (although they were very expensive so I did wonder if any would sell). <br />
<br />
I also met two fellow Folksy people, whose work I recognised and subsequently said 'You're on Folksy aren't you?' and related conversations arose. My fellow Folksyers were 'Cottons and Dreams' and 'Little Eccentric'. The ironic thing is, I have included a product from Little Eccentric in my Ruby Folksy Friday, and I actually recognised the bag sat there looking pretty! It is quite bizarre (but lovely too) to meet people you have spoken to online and to realise....they're REAL! <br />

<br />
<div align="left"><br />
</div><div align="left"><span style="font-size: small;">Whilst studying my fellow exhibitors over the two days, and through a great deal of conversation and immensely valuable advice, I learnt the following about exhibiting at craft fairs (some of which I have read about, but it was beneficial to witness it in practise). I'm sure there is much more left to learn! </span></div><div align="left"><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div><ol><li><div align="left"><span style="font-size: small;">When exhibiting, ensure your display has some height. This can be created by: fabric covered boxes, shelving units, suitcases/wicker picnic cases, lighting, custom built display units, or simple plinths. The benefit is the customer can see the full product rather than a small part or section (or having to move or touch it themselves which people seem reluctant to do). </span></div></li>
<li><div align="left"><span style="font-size: small;">Regarding actual products for sale: have a theme. 'Cottons and Dreams' has hit upon a flower motif that has proved to be very popular and is now marketing that motif on a variety of products. Little Eccentric has focussed on the techniques of felting and embellishment, which then translates into art compositions, elegant bags and accessories. </span></div></li>
<li><div align="left"><span style="font-size: small;">Number 2 in other words, know what you're about.</span> </div></li>

</div><ol><li><div align="left"><span style="font-size: small;">No height!</span></div></li>
<li><div align="left"><span style="font-size: small;">No clear theme!</span></div></li>
<li><div align="left"><span style="font-size: small;">No definite product!</span></div></li>
</ol><div align="left"><span style="font-size: small;">There is no excuse for lack of height to my stall, I can sort that. </span></div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div align="left"><span style="font-size: small;">There is a history to my other problems (as there always is to all problems!) A few years ago, I got back into my Textiles Art. I started taking photos and creating work. To be honest, I'd been looking for a way out of teaching and a way back into creating (aren't a lot of us creators trying to find the ultimate job? To do our own work every day, and have that pay the mortgage!). At the time I had never heard of Folksy or online handmade. Instead, I came across an advert for the rent of some shop space and thought that'll be a good idea and went for it! In hindsight, little consideration of what I would actually do, just a go for it attitude. I showed my work to the shop owner who enthused and loved it. So we entered into an agreement. I would pay rent, and get to put all my works into the shop. However, once the agreement began, a few problems became clear. The shop was located in a well known shopping village in Northampton, where by which a 'non-competition' policy is abided. Suddenly I was told: you cannot put framed works into the shop because we have a gallery on-site; you cannot put cushions in the shop because we have an upholsterers on-site; you cannot put bags in the shop because we have several bag shops on site. It was not the shop owner's fault, she fought for me. However, even the fabric shop owner complained about my goods because 'they are handmade and I sell the fabric for it!' That complaint went to the owner of the site who flatly disagreed (thank goodness), on the premise that imported goods could also be handmade! So I was forced to make products that fitted the theme of the shop in which I rented space: bedroom and bathroom. I made: a variety of wash-bags, make-up brush rolls, foot spa bags, anything I could invent related to that theme. </span></div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://d200fahol9mbkt.cloudfront.net/item/13739257/Make-Up_Brush_Roll_AP3_Ritzy_Swish.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://d200fahol9mbkt.cloudfront.net/item/13739257/Make-Up_Brush_Roll_AP3_Ritzy_Swish.JPG" width="200" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://d200fahol9mbkt.cloudfront.net/item/13216049/Polka_Dot_drawstring_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://d200fahol9mbkt.cloudfront.net/item/13216049/Polka_Dot_drawstring_2.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div align="left"><br />
</div><div align="left"><span style="font-size: small;">After three months, business was bad, not just for me but the shop owner alike, and I ran out of monetary resources. I had to leave the shop. This left me with a wide stock range of products that I would not ordinarily choose to make. I did home parties before christmas, and an exhibition at my place of work. Products sold well at both venues. So I got confident and began to make more of the same, believing that the products were popular (not realising at the time that it was probably just the right time of year to sell that type of product). </span></div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">'Back to Basics'</span></div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"><span style="font-size: small;">From the latest craft fair at Castle Ashby, it has become blindingly clear to me that I have been sidetracked by producing products for that shop last year. I lost my Art. I admit, I enjoy shopping for fabrics to make the products, but it's no good if they basically do not sell. I was diverted from my original Textiles Art work, which had a clear theme and was composed. This resulted in the production of items that are boring, not unusual enough and not unique. Loads of people commented on how pretty my products are, but coupled that with 'I could make that'. I quote a comment from a student of mine (bless her trying to give me advice): 'That's lovely, you could get that in Boots...Maybe that's the problem Miss, the fact that you could buy it in Boots.' You always get the truth from your students (if they trust you anyway!). </span></div><div align="left"></div><div align="left"><br />
<span style="font-size: small;">Plan of Action:</span></div><div align="left"></div><ol><li><div align="left"><span style="font-size: small;">Get back to my theme, it was there, and is evident in my gift boxes!</span></div></li>
<li><div align="left"><span style="font-size: small;">Investigate artistic avenues in a sustained manner.</span></div></li>
<li><div align="left"><span style="font-size: small;">Explore how to translate my artwork into products (so that the connection/theme is there).</span></div></li>

Indeed, the AQA Textiles Art A Level exam titles often include a variation on the 'surfaces' theme, reflective surfaces was an interesting starting point last year. Ironically, that is a title I choose to use for my students as a coursework title. <br />
<br />
<br />
So, what do we think of when we think 'surfaces'? For visual inspiration for the 'reflective surfaces', I have taken my students to a garden center/aquarium to photograph schools of fish from the surface of the water, aiming to record the reflections of light, colour and movement on the surface of the water. (I wish we could afford to go to a Sea Life centre!) <br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
In the past we have visited churches and graveyards to photograph the textures of weather-worn stone, lichen and moss. I have a personal obsession with tree bark after a holiday to Portugal, just a half hour walk with my camera revealed an unbelievable range of colours and textures. <br />
<br />

I also love the beach and unusual 'found items'; my latest find being a rusted wheel washed up on the shore, which again hosted the most beautiful array of colours. <br />

<div align="center"><strong><span style="font-size: large;">Oxford Natural history Museum</span></strong> </div> One of my favourite places to go to investigate or be inspired by surfaces is the Natural History museum in Oxford. It is open 10am to 4pm everyday, free entry. It's a fabulous place to take your children, with a huge collection of bones, fossils, skeletons, stones, rocks, precious stones, stuffed animals etc all providing a wealth of surfaces. <br />

This is the fourth online creation for me, and it's definitely a steep learning curve which takes a great deal of time and effort.<br />
<br />
My first creation was the website: <a href="http://www.ritzyswish.com/">www.ritzyswish.com</a>, which has provided ample frustration for me since Christmas. I have to admit I have paid for my website builder (no naming or shaming), and it's not easy. I find as I add photos, text or buy buttons everything shuffles around the page, and I can spend hours re-arranging items that seem to have a complete will of their own. I am not happy with the appearance of my website or the way it is organised. Frankly, I'm receiving more traffic from my other online endeavours that I don't pay for!<br />
<br />
The second online creation is much more successful (and easier to create). It's on that place that people either love or hate, FACEBOOK! Visit mine @ <a href="http://www.facebook.com/RitzySwishTextiles">www.facebook.com/RitzySwishTextiles</a>. Creating a facebook page was much easier, as there is a set-up format to follow. Admittedly, there was the odd thing that flummoxed me, IT terminology that is baffling... (what is a meta tag?) but there is a good help section and other facebook page owners that you can ask for assistance, most people are willing to help. The lay-out is standard, looks like a personal facebook page, but it looks good, and colleagues and customers can interact alike. The most important thing is, as long as you post regularly, the traffic to your facebook page is amazing! I get an average of 9000/10,000 users per month. Excellent publicity. I have received commission work through facebook, just because customers have viewed a product and enquired for an alternative. I have to admit, I'm not the sort of designer who relishes working to someone else's specification, but the customer is always right, and work is work. <br />
<br />
A new addiction, my third online experience, the lovely FOLKSY. Folksy is the UK's largest online shopping market for handmade goods. I found it through an old university friend who has recently started making jewellery (beautiful treasures, find her on Folksy <a href="http://www.folksy.com/shops/NataliaLovat">www.folksy.com/shops/NataliaLovat</a>, my current favourite necklace featured below), and is more experienced in the online sales realm. She has a shop in Folksy and another in Etsy, which is a more global handmade shopping market and consequently much larger than Folksy. Her advice was thus: the two are pretty similar, they have the similar listing fees and procedures. However, because Etsy is now so large, as a small beginner shop it is easy to become lost amongst the crowds and to be successful, constant promotion is necessary. As Folksy is smaller (but still the largest in the UK), your shop is easier to find. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PIOIuTEAVo8/TcUfPIY9hLI/AAAAAAAAACc/Msp5m1Qk5XY/s1600/Natalia+Lovat+Queen+of+Hearts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PIOIuTEAVo8/TcUfPIY9hLI/AAAAAAAAACc/Msp5m1Qk5XY/s320/Natalia+Lovat+Queen+of+Hearts.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I have been on Folksy for just over two weeks now and I love it! I find if I list one product on a daily basis, my products and thus shop are usually in the first few pages of the main category for a while that day, and sometimes remain in the first few pages of the sub-categories for more than a week. You need a paypal account, but a shop can be set-up in about 5 minutes, it's really very easy. The great thing about Folksy are the people, shop owners and customers alike. There is a thriving community in the forums, with wealth of advice to be yielded. If you're not sure about something, someone will tell you the answers! There is a daily listing club, which has dramatically boosted my viewing figures. An event that I intend to become part of is 'Folksy Friday', basically bloggers feature Folksy products in their blogs, usually based around a theme. The only problem with Folksy, is when you set-up a shop, you create you own account, which allows you to favourite products, and buy for yourself! It's very tempting to treat myself and I have to be very strict, however, my new intention from now on is to buy handmade ('Made in China' no more!) from the UK, to support our poorly economy. So I will be buying from Folksy, as and when is necessary. Incidentally, I have not had any sales yet on Folksy, however, I have heard of wonderful stories where a new shop has listed and sold within 20 minutes! For the majority I believe it takes more time, patience and perseverance! <br />
<br />
Finally, my last online offering is my new blog which hopefully you are reading now! I intend to blog about Textiles Artists, inspirations, new products, new materials and methods. I am sure I will have a group of student and ex student followers, and I hope to include their developments and experiences too. I'd rather not get personal (by talking about my son, my health, my love life) but purely celebrate all things related to Textiles!Emma Woodhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16981097493941465633noreply@blogger.com8
